Millions wade through life settling for the next best thing.

True happiness never is achieved by many because we interpret our dreams as impossibilities. However, dreams wouldn’t exist if they were impossible. Whatever you imagine can be possible with enough ingenuity and creativity. But what if your dreams are impractical? If the dreams that fill your brain are not the ones that are guaranteed to keep a roof over your head, should you still pursue them? Read below to find out why you should.

No Regrets

One reason you should follow your dreams is that those who follow their dreams have a happier, more fulfilling life. They have fewer “What if…” and “I should have” moments. As a life hack writer wrote, “Our days are numbered, so why spend them doing something we don’t love?” (Alford). Think of the world-renowned scientists, writers, thinkers and otherwise who have built an empire by following their guts. Waiting around for the right moment to arrive won’t get you anywhere. In fact, as the years go by, you’ll become even more convinced that your dream is impossible. While that’s certainly not true, it’s better to strive towards your ultimate dream now than to wait for the bitterness of society to set in. Striving for your dreams means you won’t have to look back on your life and think about what you could have and should have done.

Trying and Failing is Better Than Never Trying at All

Ever heard of the saying “It’s better to try than to never try at all.”? It’s another old saying that still rings true in modern times. Reaching for a dream forces you to move up in the world. Even if you fail, you’ll learn along the way. For instance, let’s say you wanted to be a world-renowned writer. To do this, you will perfect your skills and hopefully shadow a professional writer. You will get a few internships. You’ll write and write and write and submit your work to magazine publishers until finally one of them takes a chance on you. However, you have difficulty getting your work published by major publications.

In this example, are you exactly where you want to be? No. But are you in a better place than someone who had the same dream but never did anything to accomplish it? Most certainly. No matter what your dream is, whether that is to be the scientist that finds the cure to cancer or the artist who kickstarts the next artistic era, trying for your dream is far better than never trying at all. Even if you get stuck at a certain step, like in the example, if you keep trying, eventually you’ll reach the dream. There’s never an end when you still have the motivation to succeed. “Successful people get knocked down over and over and over, but they keep bouncing back up and keep moving forward” (Nelson).

So never stop striving to reach your goals! Don’t let life drag you down. You’ll reach your dreams, no matter how “impossible” they are. Just never give up. Never. Focus on the dream you want to accomplish as “if your life and the lives of everybody you cared about depended upon it” (Emberton). Once you do that, nothing can stop you.
